Manifesto · The cost of a silent agent

Your agent finished twelve minutes ago. It never told you.

We built a tool that talks, because we got tired of tools that go quiet.

There is a very specific kind of silence that has crept into how we work, and most of us have stopped noticing it, the way you stop noticing a sound that’s been running long enough.

It’s the silence after you give an AI agent a task. You hit enter. It starts working. And somewhere in the space between “started” and “finished,” you leave. Not on purpose, you just have nothing to do while it thinks, so you open something else, and the something else has its own gravity, and twenty minutes later you remember the agent exists.

It finished twelve minutes ago. It’s been waiting for you the entire time, saying nothing, because it has no way to say anything.

Why we couldn’t let it go

We didn’t build SKI because we thought voice coding was a nicer way to give instructions, although it is. We built it because we couldn’t stop thinking about that silence, and how strange it is that we’ve all just accepted it as the cost of working with something fast.

An agent that can finish a task in ninety seconds but has no way to tell you it’s finished isn’t actually fast. It’s fast and then stuck, waiting for you to remember to look.

How a person would do it

Think about how you’d work with a very good, very fast collaborator who sat next to you. They wouldn’t finish something and then sit in silence until you happened to glance over. They’d just tell you.

A colleague, out loud
“Done. Twelve tests pass. Want me to ship it?”

And you’d answer without even turning your chair around.

That’s such an ordinary way for two people to work together that it took us a while to notice no software did it.

The agent speaking first

So the second half of SKI isn’t voice input. It’s the agent speaking first. It tells you when it’s done, or when it’s stuck, or when it needs a decision only you can make, out loud, wherever you are, and you answer by voice without walking back to a terminal.

It sounds like a small feature. In practice, it’s the difference between babysitting a task and actually being freed by it.

Everything runs locally, Mac and Windows, free for life.

We’d rather you never have to check back again. SKI will tell you who needs you.
